Our Holy
Fathers Gregory, Bishop of Agrigentium and Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium
Gregory was born in Sicily, near Agrigentium, where he later served as
bishop. He took part in the Fifth Ecumenical Council in 553. He died in 630.
Amphilochius was a friend of St. Basil who ordained him bishop of Iconium in
374. Appearing before Emperor Theodosius and his son, Arcadius, co-Emperor,
Amphilochius did reverence to Theodosius, but ignored Arcadius as though he were
not there. Infuriated, the Emperor sought to evict him, but Amphilochius said,
"Do you see, Emperor, how you do not tolerate a slight paid to your son? In the
same way, God the Father does not tolerate dishonor paid to his Son and is
angered by the Arian heresy." The Emperor understood and marvelled at his
wosdom and daring. Amphilochius wrote many theological works. He died in 397.
